OAU alumni plans N15bn hostel project

The Alumni Association of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife has unveiled its plan to build a multi-billion naira hostel for the students of the university.
Speaking at an event organised to mark the 9th Great Ife Alumni International Reunion last Saturday, President of the association, Mr. Segun Oke, said that the project would cost N15 billion.
Oke also said that the association decided to embark on the project in order to ease the accommodation problem of the students, stating that the Federal Government could not do everything needed to make the university one of the best in the world.
He noted that the association had renovated virtually all the existing hostels on campus, while renovations were also carried out at the Faculty of Agriculture lecture theatre among others.
He said, “The alumni association will ensure that the welfare of Obafemi Awolowo University students are adequately taken care of.
“We have set machinery in motion to construct a N15bn hostel to ease the accommodation problem of the students.
“Besides, no fewer than 100 students annually benefit from the scholarships given to outstanding students of the institution by the association.”
Also, hundreds of people, Oke added, benefitted from the free medical treatment organised by the alumni as part of the activities to celebrate the reunion.
He disclosed that the association had put in place a body saddled with the responsibility of ensuring harmony among workers, management, students and members of the university community.

WAEC Bans Two Schools In Imo State For Exam Malpractices
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has barred two secondary schools in Imo State from registering as an examination centre or presenting their students as candidates in any of its examinations for a period of 5 years.
Reports stated that The council also derecognized 28 schools for two years as a result examination malpractices.

The Head, Public Affairs of the council, Mr Demianus Ojijeogu, who disclosed this on Thursday declined to name the affected schools, he said the schools are usually referred by their centre numbers and not by their names.
He added that WAEC officials were locked out for more than 30 minutes in the second school obviously for examination malpractice to perpetrate.
He noted that as for the derecognized schools, examinations will still hold in their schools but their teachers will not be used as invigilators.
He added that there are 28 of those schools across the country and they can still reapply after two years, stating that things have been put in place to prevent a recurrence of examination malpractice.
Senate Moves To Upgrade YABATECH And KADPOLY To Varsities
The Senate has begun the process of converting Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) and the Kaduna Polytechnic (KADPOLY) into City Universities.
The Bills titled, City University of Technology Yaba, 2016 sponsored by Senator Gbenga Ashafa, APC, Lagos East and that of City University of Technology Kaduna Bill, 2016, sponsored by Senator Jibrin Barau, APC, Kano North, scaled through first reading at the Senate plenary on Wednesday.
The proposed laws will soon go through the second reading and debate after which they would be referred to the Senate Committee on Tertiary Education and TETfund for further legislative inputs.
The committee will thereafter produce a report which will also be debated and adopted, followed by preparing the bills for the Third Reading and eventually passage into laws.
